Designing A Customisable Kid’s Bedroom with Milola
For many of our customers, who like us have young children, this season means only one thing: the school holidays are coming. Eight weeks of playdates, sleepovers, late nights, and day trips as your kids make the most of their glorious summer break.
As a family-run business, we understand the importance of keeping the kids entertained during the school holidays, we also know how hard and stressful it can be! Here at Milola, we supply a range of customisable furniture pieces, beds, and accessories to help make their bedrooms the ultimate summer playroom and hopefully keep them amused and their rooms tidy for as long as possible!
So, whether you’re looking to upgrade to a more grown-up bed for your growing kids or planning to revamp their entire space for the break, Milola is here to help. Through our guide this month, we’ll be exploring the essentials of a great kid's room and sharing our insights into the exciting customisation options available when shopping through Milola.
What is a Kid's Room?
For many children, their room is about more than just sleeping. It’s their independent space to play, to read, to escape, to create. It’s where they’ll develop those all-important memories of growing up, having fun, playing with their friends or spending time with their siblings. It’s their playground, their dressing room, their reading corner and their workspace in one – so it’s important to make it feel as special and unique as possible for them.
From finding the perfect bed for your growing family to choosing the right desk for your new school-starter, there are some important decisions to be made when designing your kids’ room.
Start with the Bed
To help inspire and encourage your child’s development, a good night’s sleep is key. Whether they’re sharing a bunkbed space with siblings or settling into their first big kid bed, it’s a good idea to find the right fit for your space. A kid’s bed should be an area that’s comfortable, soft and safe – with a solid, durable frame for all those playtime adventures and imaginary quests. A multifunctional bed, such as our Climb and Slide bed from Lifetime Kidsroom, can provide fun as well, giving your kids a new and exciting way to get up in the morning.
If storage space is a little limited (aka overrun with LEGO creations and giant stuffed bears), then a storage bed is also a great solution to keep the space clutter-free. The ALL-IN-ONE Semi-High Bed is a popular choice for parents looking for extra storage, as not only does it provide a little extra height for the kids to play with, but it offers a number of different drawers and cupboards for clothes, books and more.
Finally, if sleepovers are the most important element of your child’s social life right now, then the Müller Small Living Stacking Bed and the Lifetime Kidsroom Cabin Guest Bed should be at the top of your shopping list. The Müller Stacking Beds offer two complete beds in one, with their unique design allowing them to be used as either twin beds or a single - perfect for family visits and overnight stays. You can even on request order more than two beds and have them stacked when not in use. The Cabin Guest Bed is another optimal choice as it has an easy-to-assemble guest bed tucked neatly under a comfortable single bed in a playful cabin-frame design. This has been a firm favourite with our daughter (and us), as it's so simple to pull out when her friends stay and store the spare bedding underneath for quick access on impromptu sleepovers!
Building a Theme
When your child pictures their perfect bedroom – what do they see? Are they looking for lots of colour, fun shapes and unique designs, or something a little more grown-up and mature? Do they love animals, spaceships, books, fairies or football?
When creating the theme for your kid’s room, it’s important to know what they like and what they’ll want to see first thing in the morning when they jump out of bed. Creating moods and atmospheres through colour, play spaces through clever zoning, and fun imaginative designs through fabric choices are all part of building a theme – meaning there can be a lot for parents to think about. It is important to involve your child in the design choices as they will value a space much more when they have been involved in the decision-making.
“An empty room is a story waiting to happen, and you are the author."
It’s important to start from the ground up – choosing a few colours to create a palette and perhaps a visual style to complement these shades. Use these colours and styles to influence your choices of rugs and flooring, then move up to selecting beds, tables, desks and wardrobes.
Choosing simple, minimalist furniture is a good way to help balance out a strong theme or bright colour palette, allowing the room to feel calm and cohesive without overstimulation.
Finally head up to the soft furnishings, i.e. your blankets, bedding, throws and curtains – sticking to the same colour palette as before. Add in some bespoke themed lighting fixtures, accessories and some wall decals and that’s it – your themed room is ready!
