Mattress 101, Which one is best for you
Ever stayed in a hotel and found the mattress too firm and the pillows too soft? The older I get the more I hate sleeping anywhere but my in my own bed, largely because a good nights sleep is down to three principle areas, the mattress, the support from the bed frame itself, and the pillows.
In this article we will focus on the mattress, which is an extremely important element and one that is very personal to the user, and as we will show you, not one size fits all. Here we help you understand the choices open to you when buying a mattress, the features and benefits of each and hopefully help you discover the perfect nights sleep.
What different types of mattresses are there?
There are essentially 4 different types of mattresses, Traditional Spring Mattress, Pocket Spring/ Independent Spring Mattresses, Memory Foam Mattresses or increasingly popular are a Hybrid Mattress, which combine the benefits of the first three.
What type of mattress is right for me?
Spring Mattress
Spring mattresses have been a popular choice for many years, attractive due to their affordability. They are constructed with a network of metal coils or springs, which provide support and comfort. These coils are usually covered with layers of cushioning materials, such as foam or fabric.
Spring mattresses are of a fairly simple design, which allow for a variety of firmness options to suit your preferences and high levels of breathability, promoting a cool sleeping environment. They are also very supportive for heavier weights.
However, there are a few things to consider when purchasing a Spring Mattress. They may not provide sufficient support for individuals with specific medical conditions or chronic pain. The coils can create pressure points, especially for side sleepers or those with joint issues. Also, some people find that the traditional spring mattress is quite bouncy so when one person moves the other also moves. If this is a concern but you like Spring Mattresses it is worth looking at a Pocket Spring Mattress, see below.
Pocket Spring/ Independent Spring Mattresses
Pocket spring mattresses, also known as independent spring mattresses, are another popular option here in Switzerland. Made up of individual springs that are sewn into fabric pockets, allowing each spring to move independently, in turn enabling the mattress to contour and adapt to the shape of your body, providing excellent support and pressure relief.
These individual pockets minimize motion transfer, so it is also a great choice for couples or individuals who tend to toss and turn during the night, in turn disrupting each other's sleep. In fact, this independent spring technology can reduce the vibrations of two people lying on the surface by up to 80%.
Additionally, thanks to the open structure of the springs, pocket spring mattresses are a breathable solution, helping to regulate body temperature and keep you cool on those hot summer's nights.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam mattresses came on the market in the last 20 years and are growing in popularity. They are made from a high-density foam that contours to your body shape, providing excellent support and pressure relief which makes them ideal for people suffering from back or joint pain, as it helps to alleviate pressure points.
Another popular feature of memory foam is its ability to absorb motion, so if you share a bed with someone who is constantly moving in their sleep, you should get a more restful night's sleep. Some people can find traditional Memory Foam Mattresses too warm and if this is you, you should look for a gel infused foam, as this is even cooler than traditional memory foam.
Memory foam is also one of the more durable solutions, designed to last for many years without losing their shape. This can make the initial up-front investment less painful as you know you won't need to do it again anytime soon. Some memory foam mattresses use latex for the foam, which bounces back quicker than traditional foam, lessening the feeling that you are sinking into the mattress.'
Memory foam mattresses are also hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for allergy or asthma sufferers.
Hybrid mattresses
If you like some characteristics of one mattress but different features of another, then a Hybrid Mattress may be the answer. These combine the best features, typically of pocket spring and memory foam, and we find this an increasingly popular choice amongst our customers.
With a hybrid mattress, you can find the pressure relief and body-contouring benefits of memory foam, along with the support and durability of pocket springs. The combination of these two materials creates a truly comfortable and supportive sleep surface.
One of the key advantages of hybrid mattresses is their versatility. They are suitable for all types of sleepers and allows for a balanced level of support, catering to different body types, needs and sleeping positions.
What other considerations are there when buying a mattress?
Size
When buying a mattress, size is an important consideration. At Milola.ch, we offer a range of sizes to fit different needs and room sizes. The most common sizes in Switzerland are:
- 90x200cm (Single),
- 140x200cm (Double),
- 160x200cm (Queen), and
- 180x200cm (King).
However, if you have a particular size you need then please send us a message, as we are able to supply mattresses custom made to a size you require. If needed, we can also help you find the perfect bed to put with your mattress.
One important point when choosing a mattress (and bed) is to consider the access for the delivery. There is nothing worse than finding the bed of your dreams and then discovering it is too big to get into your home!
Firmness
Another consideration is the firmness of the mattress. This is a personal preference and can vary depending on your body type, sleeping position, and any specific health conditions you may have. At Milola.ch, we offer mattresses in different firmness levels, from soft to medium to firm, so you can choose the one that feels most comfortable for you.
As mattress types and needs are so personal, an increasingly popular choice for couples is to have two single mattresses with a mattress topper, which allows each person to have their preferred level of comfort, but without feeling there is a line of separation down the centre of the bed.
Also, if the mattress is to be used on a sofa bed consider the level of comfort both for when sitting and when laying down. Secondly, if the mattress is to be stored under the sofa bed, ensure the height is not too great, otherwise it wont be able to be stored when not in use!
Price
Budget is another important consideration when buying a mattress. At Milola.ch, we offer mattresses at different price points to suit different needs and budgets. We believe that a good mattress is an investment in your sleep and overall health and it's worth investing in a quality mattress that will provide you with comfort and support for years to come and importantly won't need replacing in the short term.
How can Milola help you choose a new mattress?
